COSA FARE
- Scegliere un prigioniero o spedire una lettera 'cumulativa', inserendo se possibile all'interno i nomi dei prigionieri ai quali ci si intende rivolgere.
- Inserire SEMPRE all'interno della lettera il proprio nome ed indirizzo. Il personale carcerario consegna le lettere trattenendo le buste.
- Ricordare che le lettere, sia in entrata che in uscita, sono soggette a censura.
- Parlate ai prigionieri di voi stessi: hobbies, interessi, passione per l'Irlanda...ecc..
- Chiedete loro di parlarvi della loro vita, famiglia, hobbies, interessi, se stanno studiando....
- Cercate di rendere interessanti le lettere, ma inizialmente non dilungatevi troppo.
- Siate di atteggiamento amichevole ed ottimista, scrivete ai prigionieri come se steste scrivendo ad un qualsiasi 'amico di penna'.
- Se volete instaurare un regolare rapporto di corrispondenza, chiedete al prigioniero di inoltrare la lettera a qualcuno che possa mantenere i contatti nel caso egli non abbia il tempo per risponderevi.
- Se potete scrivete a più prigionieri. Le prime lettere potranno essere simili, ma evitate che siano troppo formali e standardizzate.
- E' possibile spedire giornali, riviste e libri purchè la copertina NON sia rigida.
- Tenete in considerazione, soprattutto le donne, che può accadere di essere oggetto di 'particolari' apprezzamenti da parte del prigioniero.
- Attendere anche fino a 3 settimane per ricevere una risposta, durante i periodi festivi i tempi potrebbero allungarsi.
COSA NON FARE
- Chiedere particolari inerenti all'arresto (soprattutto se il processo è ancora in corso) e/o alla condanna, lasciate che sia lui stesso a parlarvene.
- Usare slogans, simboli di propaganda repubblicana o frasi in gaelico.
- Lodare i prigionieri per il loro operato o ruolo ricoperto, molti prigionieri non ritengono di essere degli eroi.
- Non siate delusi nel caso di mancata risposta. Alcuni prigionieri sono impegnati negli studi o semplicemente non sono interessati ad instaurare un rapporto di corrispondenza.
- Chiedere e/o offrire nulla di natura personale, pena la censura.
- Spedire oggetti elettronici, o deperibili.
- Scrivere con l'intento di iniziare una regolare corrispondenza, per poi non mantenerla.

DO
- Include your full address on each letter.
- Attach sufficient armail postage on each letter to Great Britain and Ireland.
- Include the prisoner number if any; avoid any overtly political comments/stamps/stickers/ on envelopes.
- Remember that all letters in and out will be censored.
- Tell prisoner about yourself (hobbies and interests, if you study Irish history, language, etc.). If necessary, let them know if you are male or female.
- Ask general questions about their hometown, family, hobbies/interests, if they are studying anything.
- Make the letter interesting - but keep initial letters short.
- If you want to start a regular correspondence, ask prisoner to forward the letter to someone else if they don't have the time to write back.
- Be friendly and upbeat - write them as you would write to any pen pal.
- Write to as many prisoner as you can. Your first letter to each one can be very similar, but don't make it sound like a 'form letter' either.
- Consider sending magazines and books (paperback only) on almost any subject.
- Be prepared for a certain amount of flirtation.
- Expect at least 3 weeks before you receive a response to each letter, longer around holidays.
DON'T
- Ask about politics or political affiliations, or the prisoners case at the outset - let the prisoner bring up.
- Romanticize the struggle or their role - most IPOWs will be embarassed to be treated like an hero.
- Ask - or offer - anything of a very personal nature, due to the censors.
- Take it personally if you don't receive a reply - some prisoners will have no interest in writing or will be too busy. Dont' be discouraged! Always write back and ask - sometimes letters in either direction go missing.
- Send valuable, perishable, electronic or remotely controversial items without asking first.
- Write with the intention of keeping a regular correspondence and then not follow through.
